Match Report

Essendon hadn’t won a game in June since 2009, but that hoodoo was put to rest as the Bombers produced a stunning last quarter to run over the top of Fremantle. It was also the Bombers’ first win at Patersons Stadium since 2008. Key forward Michael Hurley was the difference in the game with a career-best six goals. For the majority of the night it was one of the best contests of 2012. The first quarter especially was terrific free-flowing football; a far cry from the Dockers’ usual lockdown, dour style of play. One of the highlights of the night was an exceptional running goal from Essendon forward Stewart Crameri. The 23-year-old took possession in the centre and out-ran Dockers defender Luke McPharlin (a former 400m running champion) all the way to the goalsquare. Fremantle was left bitterly disappointed with the loss considering they let slip a 17-point lead with a minute to go in the third quarter before two late Bombers goals.

COACHES COMMENTS
Ross Lyon (Frem): It really is about our midfield supplying enough quality entries to make our forwards look dangerous. I thought they did look dangerous tonight. The last quarter, well, they were sort of impotent because the ball didn't get there. You could put (ex-North Melbourne champion) Wayne Carey down there and he wouldn't have looked too good in the last quarter.

James Hird (Ess): It meant that we weren't too far away and we just needed a couple of scores to keep us going. Michael's goal on his left foot I thought was terrific, and Jobe, I can't speak highly enough of Jobe. It wasn't his greatest game - he didn't have 40 possessions and I thought Crowley got the better of him in the second quarter - but often when you get beaten and you fight back, they're the best performances.
