Match Report

This game wasn’t Melbourne v Greater Western Sydney; it was Melbourne v Tom Scully. Both parties had been looking forward to this day ever since the former number one draft pick announced he would be leaving the Demons at the end of 2011. Scully left after just two years at the club to take up a multi-million dollar contract in Sydney’s West. A chorus of boos echoed around the MCG every time the 21-year-old went near the ball. But despite a fast start from the Giants, the Demons had the last laugh, rampaging to a rare win. Melbourne kicked 14 goals to four after quarter time with Mitch Clark (four goals), regular defender Jared Rivers (four goals) and Nathan Jones having terrific games. The only downside of the Demons’ second win of the year was a heavy concussion to Clark just before half-time. The key forward was badly hurt in a sickening collision with teammate James Magner’s knee and was subbed out of the contest. The Giants struggled badly in their first ever appearance at the MCG and lacked the competiveness that has largely been their trademark since entering the AFL at the start of 2012.

COACHES COMMENTS
Mark Neeld (Melb): In modern footy the ability to play a number of roles is really important. If we can develop that as a club that is a reasonable thing for us moving forward. We met as a group on Monday and we talked about the manner in which we wanted to play, not just today but there were certain things we wanted to see so I was pleasing for the most part that we got that right today.

Kevin Sheedy (GWS): I think it was very important for us today that our players actually got to play on the MCG. That's a hell of a difference from Skoda Stadium where they played last week. I think they'll understand the extra running and spreading from stoppages, just how super fit you've got to be when you're playing on a ground like the MCG.

Umpires: McBurney, Ryan, Hay
