Match Report

This game always had the potential to be a massive blowout, and so it proved to be. Second-placed West Coast humiliated a struggling Gold Coast, piling on goals early and late in the game to win by a whopping 126 points. The Eagles booted the last 12 goals of the game, and at one stage they threatened to fly to a record first quarter. The loss was Gold Coast’s 20th in a row, while the Eagles stormed to their 18th straight win at home. John Worsfold’s side more than made up for a close loss to ladder leading Collingwood the week before. West Coast was so far in front, young gun Andrew Gaff (who was close to best on ground with 25 possessions), was substituted out of the match in the third quarter. Not even the incomparable Gary Ablett could lift the Suns; he was well down on his usual standards.

COACHES COMMENTS
John Worsfold (WC): The intensity early, but especially in the second half, was as good as we could have expected over the full 60 minutes of the second half. It wasn't so much ruthless in regards to the margin, it was ruthless in regards to playing the way they wanted to for as long a period in the game as we possibly can.

Guy McKenna (GC): It's certainly disappointing to lose like we did today and get beaten around the contested situation. They just need to physically grow up and mentally grow up as well.

Umpires: McBurney, Dalgleish, Fila
