Match Report

The second Sydney derby looked like being a competitive contest in the first half as Greater Western Sydney more than took it up to big brother, Sydney. But the young Giants tired in the second half as the Swans display was ruthless. The midfield was one of the areas where the Giants were able to hold their own early, but the experienced Swans bodies took over in the second half. Kieran Jack (33 possessions) was a more than worthy recipent of the Brett Kirk Medal for best on ground, while Jarrad McVeigh had a night to remember. GWS coach Kevin Sheedy said during the week that this game would be a good indicator to see how much his side had improved. Going by that logic, the Giants are a five goal worse side than when they clashed with their cross-city rivals in round one. Premiership players Chad Cornes and Luke Power were serviceable for the AFL’s newest side, while star of the future Toby Greene finished with 31 possessions. The crowd of 22,565 would have been a major disappointment for the AFL and both clubs. That figure was well down on 38,203 who witnessed the first Sydney derby.

COACHES COMMENTS
John Longmire (Syd): He (Adam Goodes) started a bit quiet and I thought the last quarter he started to get some pretty good contests and win his one-on-ones. He was a lot better tonight than what he was last week.

Kevin Sheedy (GWS): We will be out there scouring the countryside and looking at players that aren't happy at their club, who don't think they are getting a really good chance at their club. If they are anywhere near off contract or if opposition clubs may let them go, then we will work out what can happen.

Umpires: Hay, Wenn, Armstrong
