Match Report

Geelong stayed within touch of a spot in the top four with an unconvincing win over Port Adelaide. The Power entered the contest missing all of their leadership group, which included a plethora of key players. To make matters worse, Jacob Surjan was a late withdrawal before the game. But Port didn’t disgrace themselves in icy conditions. The terrible weather might have had something to do with the worst crowd at the Cats’ home ground in 21 years. It was the usual suspects for Geelong. James Kelly, Jimmy Bartel (who at one stage managed to trick the umpire into paying a free kick against Port for out of bounds on the full) and captain Joel Selwood all played crucial roles in the 38-point win. Although the Cats got the four points, coach Chris Scott was concerned with their form and was less than impressed with the result. Regular defender Harry Taylor backed up a six-goal effort against GWS in round 11 with another three goals.

COACHES COMMENTS
Chris Scott (Geel): We thought for the most part that we were pretty good, but not much more than that. The opposition were certainly enthusiastic and they were very good in that third quarter, but we thought we were very poor. In the end we probably did what we needed to do, but not a lot more than that.

Matthew Primus (Port): We still lost and (we) certainly don't like losing so regardless of the team and who played today we did give ourselves an opportunity to win the game and we weren't good enough.

Umpires: Farmer, Stewart, Grun
