Match Report

It wasn’t pretty, but Richmond came away with the four points against Melbourne after a tumultuous week for the club. The Tigers sacked Daniel Connors and suspended young star midfielder Dustin Martin after the pair were late to training after taking sleeping tablets the night before. The error-ridden contest definitely wasn’t memorable. Richmond should have sealed the four points long before the final quarter, but terrible kicking at goal prevented a blowout of similar proportions to the corresponding fixture in round three. There were several contentious umpiring decisions in this match; most notably two calls that were mistakenly given behinds instead of goals. Tiger Matt White kicked a clear goal in the third quarter, but the goal umpire disagreed and the video technology was not called upon. Demon James Magner was also wrongly given a behind in the second term. Melbourne battled hard, but without two of their most important players - big men Mitch Clark and Mark Jamar - they never looked like winning their third game of the season.

COACHES COMMENTS
Mark Neeld (Melb): Richmond's start was outstanding. They put us under a lot of heat with their ball movement and their defensive pressure. That's frustrating.

Damien Hardwick (Rich): It's not often you make seven changes to a footy side and probably get the result you were after, so we're just pleased to walk away with the four points. I think it just shows we've probably matured as a footy club. We spoke about it during the week, that it was a tough call to make but the right one.

Umpires: Wenn, Foot, Armstrong
