Match Report

It was a Sunday massacre at the MCG as Hawthorn eased to a record win over expansion club Greater Western Sydney. The Hawks won by 162 points, but incredibly the margin could have been far more devastating for the Giants. Hawthorn had 42 more scoring shots than GWS, kicking 28.25. Their percentage jumped from 138 to 152 because of the win. What the scoreline might have been had the Hawks had their kicking boots on is scary to contemplate. Rising Star favourite, GWS forward Jeremy Cameron was reported for a high bump on Clinton Young in the third quarter. The only positive for the Giants was an outstanding performance from midfielder Toby Greene, who was by far and way their best player with 33 possessions. He went head-to-head with Hawks champion Sam Mitchell. After kicking a four goals, Lance Franklin was subbed off with hamstring soreness in the third quarter. But his absence mattered little, as Jarryd Roughead kicked six majors, while Luke Breust and Cyril Rioli finished with three each for Hawthorn.

COACHES COMMENTS
Alastair Clarkson (Haw): We've been getting outscored in last quarters, so to really put the foot on the pedal and on their throat was good. If you look at the ladder, it's probably going to come down to a few things with the logjam that it is up top, but when you've got Collingwood, Geelong and Essendon in the next few weeks, they're not going to be wins like that, so you've got to take these ones when you can and go for it.

Kevin Sheedy (GWS): With the group that we've got at the moment, that's a disappointing loss, but against a very, very good side who I expect probably will be in the Grand Final.

Umpires: Ritchie, Ryan, Pannell
