Match Report

It’s a cliché, but this was the definitive eight-point game. North Melbourne and Carlton entered round 16 on seven wins and were fighting for a spot inside the top eight. But it was the Kangaroos they came away with the vital win in a free-flowing and fiery contest. Not even the return of star midfielder Marc Murphy after a two-month absence with a shoulder injury could inspire the Blues. Skipper Chris Judd (36 possessions, three goals) was by far Carlton’s best. But the two-time Brownlow medalist was reported for misconduct on North’s Leigh Adams in a bizarre incident in the second quarter. Judd appeared to pull Adams’ right shoulder back while he was face down on the ground. The young Roo immediately left the ground for treatment on the shoulder. The universally respected Judd was booed by North fans for the remainder of the night. North Melbourne, the pioneers of Friday Night Football, didn’t disappoint their fans during the club’s only appearance on the big stage for 2012. Tall forward Drew Petrie kicked an equal career-high seven goals – all before three-quarter time when he was subbed out of the contest.

COACHES COMMENTS
Brad Scott (NM): Our players now have enough evidence to know that our best is pretty good, but it's important that they remember why they were able to play that way. There are still a lot of things we've got to work on, but I think the signs for the future are really good.

Brett Ratten (Carl): They just scored too easily. That was the most disappointing thing about tonight, that 'save a goal' mentality in comparison to last week - there was a fair differential

Umpires: Schmitt, Meredith, Pannell
