Match Report

Essendon was pushed hard for three quarters, but ultimately they proved to be too good for a fading Port Adelaide side. It was the Bombers’ first win against Port in Adelaide since their last premiership year of 2000. Essendon were buoyed by the return of injury-prone big man Scott Gumbleton. He was taken at number two in the 2006 draft but has played just 23 games since coming to the club. Gumbleton got through the game and played an important role up forward, slotting three goals. But it wasn’t all good news for James Hird’s side – they lost another player to a soft-tissue injury. Promising youngster Michael Hibberd didn’t last the game, going down with a quad injury that could see him out for up to a month. Port went into the game with their own injury concerns, and while the inexperienced line-up lost by 50 points, the game much closer in general play than the final margin suggests.

COACHES COMMENTS
Matthew Primus (Port): There are too many games this year that we thought we could have won. This group (of players), they have improved - but they haven't improved enough.

James Hird (Ess): It's an ongoing debate with how hard you work your players, but the one thing we want to do with this group is get them to a point that when we get a chance ... in finals, we can beat the best teams. If you're not fit enough and if you're not strong enough you can't do it.

Umpires: Farmer, Ritchie, Fila
