Match Report

This game was a good indicator of where both sides are at in the second half of 2012. The Hawks are firing and look better equipped to win a premiership than any other time since their 2008 triumph. On the other hand, the Bulldogs’ fighting spirit that was evident in the first half of the season has all but evaporated and they appear to be a shattered side. As has been the problem all season, the lack of options up forward is what really hurt them. They were brave for the first half of this contest, but they kicked just one goal for the remainder of the afternoon as Hawthorn booted nine. Jack Gunston (four goals) played his best game for Hawks since crossing over from Adelaide at the end of 2011, while Sam Mitchell was irrepressible in the midfield. Matthew Boyd could be headed for another Charlie Sutton Medal after an impressive display. Brian Lake kept in-form Hawks forward Jarryd Roughead to two goals.

COACHES COMMENTS
Brendan McCartney (WB): I'm not camouflaging it - [there] wasn't enough grunt out there today. That little 10-minute patch in the third quarter is not what we want to be.

Alastair Clarkson (Haw): We've been particularly conscious of making sure that when we get opportunities to put some scoreboard pressure on the opposition that we try to take advantage of that. But, by and large, the most critical thing for us to build is not percentage, it's [to build] four points and to just keep getting those.

Umpires: Foot, Armstrong, Jeffery
