Match Report

The match of the round proved to be a fizzer as Sydney accounted for West Coast in surprisingly easy fashion. For the great modern rivals who played off in the 2005 and 2006 Grand Final classics, this was one of their most disappointing clashes. It was the Swans’ sixth straight win over the Eagles and it ended West Coast’s 18-match winning streak at their Patersons Stadium fortress. Incredibly, Sydney were the last team to defeat the Eagles at their home ground, back in round three, 2011. In recent Sydney-West Coast games, even if one side has skipped to a comfortable lead, the other side has eventually made a comeback. Not this time. The Swans built on their lead at every change, with speedster Lewis Jetta heading the scoring with four goals. Midfielders Kieran Jack, Daniel Hannebery and Ryan O’Keefe all played crucial roles in the resounding victory. The win secured top spot on the ladder for the Swans, while the Eagles slipped to fifth, with a crucial game against Adelaide to follow.

COACHES COMMENTS
John Worsfold (WC): We were shuffling players around to get a team out there a little bit today. They're probably close to the most experienced team in the competition and tonight we were fairly inexperienced in names and also in positions where guys were trying to play for us.

John Longmire (Syd): I understand people want to talk about September now but I don't focus on it because it's only July. There's a long way to go. I'm just really pleased with the style of footy we are playing and that's what we have got to try to keep doing.

Umpires: Margetts, Stevic, Findlay
