Match Report

Hawthorn sent out an ominous warning to the rest of the competition with an exhilarating display against arch rivals Essendon. The Hawks were boosted by the return of their captain, Luke Hodge, for his first game in three months, but they were still missing star forward Lance Franklin. Hodge took no time adjusting to life back in the big time by slotting through five goals before the Hawks coaching staff took the precautionary option of subbing him out for Shane Savage in the third quarter. Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson had a big week – he was caught swearing at a young umpire in junior league match and he also punched a hole in the wall of the coaches box at the MCG the week before. But his turbulent lead-up had no impact on how his side played. The game was all over by quarter time as the Hawks slammed on eight goals to one. They didn’t let up in the second term, with the premiership favourites going into the main break 68 points up. It was arguably the most powerful half of footy a team has put together all season. A positive for Essendon was the return of speedster Jason Winderlich after 18 months out with a knee injury in 2011 and then a hamstring setback. Bombers fans would also have been delighted by the form of another injury-prone favourite, Scott Gumbleton – he kicked four goals in his third game back.

COACHES COMMENTS
James Hird (Ess): It will be interesting to look at the tape and see which guys wanted to defend and which guys didn't want to, and why it went the way it did.

Alastair Clarkson (Haw): It's been a big week, but I think it's been done to death, all the stuff to do with me. If we can just focus on the team and their performance, I'd probably prefer to do that.

Umpires: Meredith, Findlay, Jeffery
