Match Report

Geelong and Hawthorn's amazing run of close contests continued in an enthralling contest, described by many as the best match of the season and one of the greatest of recent years, in front of 65,287 frenzied fans on Friday night. After Geelong burst out of the blocks with a withering nine-goal first quarter, the Hawks went into the quarter-time huddle 40-points adrift. When Tom Hawkins booted the first goal of the second term, the margin blew out to beyond 50 and the Cats looked set for a huge win. But Hawthorn settled to kick the remaining five goals of the first half and the gap was just 17 points at the long break. The two sides traded goals in the third quarter and continued to do so for the first 10 minutes of the final quarter, at which point Geelong led by 19 points. Cyril Rioli then ignited a four-goal Hawthorn burst which took the Hawks to a six-point lead with five minutes remaining. Luke Breust and David Hale then squandered chances to put the result beyond doubt and a goal to Hawkins at the 28-minute mark put Geelong back within a goal. The Hawks added two further behinds before allowing the Cats to stream out of defence with less than half a minute remaining. Captain Joel Selwood took a courageous midfield mark before honouring a Tom Hawkins lead with a perfect pass.

Hawkins did not break stride as the final siren sounded while he walked in to kick from outside the 50-metre arc and his kick, which never looked like missing, gave Geelong their second two-point win over the Hawks this year. Geelong have now won all nine games between these two sides since succumbing to Hawthorn in the 2008 grand final, with seven of those matches being decided by less than ten points. The result left Hawthorn clinging to its top-four spot and left the door ajar for an unlikely late-season entry into the top four for the Cats.

COACHES COMMENTS
Alastair Clarkson (Haw): Both our start and our finish were disappointing. We lacked a bit of composure at the end. I think we're on the right path but we are not quite there yet.

Chris Scott (Geel): He [Tom Hawkins] had been kicking them well so I was pretty confident. We went some way to showing that our best is still pretty good.

Umpires: Stephen McBurney, Mathew Nicholls, Brett Rosebury.
