Match Report

North Melbourne cemented its place in the top eight with a strong second-half performance against the Western Bulldogs. For the Bulldogs it was a disappointing continuation of a trend which has seen them play strong, competitive football in the first half of its recent matches, only to fade away in the second. Since their last win, in round 12, against Port Adelaide, the Bulldogs have been in the mix at half time in all games, other than against Essendon. However, with a side that now boasts more youngsters than it has for some years, they appear unable to withstand the rigours of a fill match. North Melbourne on the other hand, have scarcely missed a beat since their flogging at the hands of Buddy Franklin and Hawthorn in round 10. They have now won seven of their last eight matches, with their only loss coming against West Coast by jut two points. For the Kangaroos, Drew Petrie continued his dominant form and the evergreen Brent Harvey played a wonderful game. The Bulldogs fielded two debutants, Jason Johannisen and Michael Talia. Johannisen showed promise in gathering 17 touches, while Talia managed a goal with one of his first possessions. North Melbourne's win takes them into seventh spot on the ladder, ahead of Essendon and Fremantle on percentage. With four rounds remaining, North's destiny remains in its own hands, with crucial games against Essendon and Collingwood to come over the next fortnight.
