Match Report

In a Friday-night thriller, the second in consecutive weeks, West Coast pipped a depleted Geelong at the post to keep alive their hopes of a top four finish in 2012. For the Cats, the heartbreaking loss virtually extinguished their own hopes of a double chance and, with two tough fixtures to come in the last three weeks of the season, still not assured of September action. Despite losing Tom Hawkins to concussion in the first quarter, the Cats held sway for much of this match and led at the first three changes, although the margin was never great. With the Eagles trailing by a point at the last break, the final quarter became an arm-wrestle. After the two sides traded early last-term goals, Masten, Gaff and Lynch all scored for West Coast to give them a three-goal buffer half way through. But Geelong came again and late goals to Walker and Johnson took the margin to under a goal. With less than a minute remaining, the Eagles got the vital last centre-clearance of the match, enabling them to hold on for a five-point win.

For West Coast, Daniel Kerr, Matthew Priddis and Luke Shuey were magnificent all night, while Dean Cox was valuable in the ruck and as a resting forward, kicking three goals. Geelong, having lost Chapman prior to the match and Hawkins early, were well served by Stevie Johnson and Andrew Mackie, although the mercurial Stevie J undid some of his good work with a couple of poor kicks for goal at vital stages of the match. Both sides face challenging games against top four and top eight aspirants in two of the season's remaining three rounds. West Coast will meet Collingwood at home in round 22 and Hawthorn at the MCG in the final round, while Geelong take on St Kilda in round 21 and Sydney in round 23. With so many sides jockeying for positions within the top eight, the difference between losing and winning those games could be enormous for both the Eagles and the Cats.

COACHES' COMMENTS

Chris Scott (Geel): When you lose one of the best key forwards in the competition, it's obviously going to have an impact.
