Match Report

In a thrilling prelude to this year's finals series, Hawthorn came from 37 points down to snatch victory - and top spot on the ladder - from Sydney at the SCG on Saturday evening. The Swans, who defeated Hawthorn at York Park earlier this season, flew out of the blocks and led four goals to none at the first break. Shortly after, when Shame Mumford kicked his second at the nine-minute mark of the second quarter, it was seven goals to one and it looked as though Sydney would win this game in a canter. But Buddy Franklin, returning from a six-week injury layoff, sparked the Hawks with three goals in 10 minutes. With Burgoyne chipping in with two goals and Suckling one, Hawthorn reduced to margin to just five points at the main break.

The third quarter, indeed the entire second half, turned into an arm-wrestle as first Sydney, then Hawthorn gained a slight ascendency. At the 27-minute mark of the last quarter Ryan O'Keefe put the Swans five points ahead before Burgoyne kicked his third to wrest back a one-point lead for the Hawks. Hawthorn gained the final centre-clearance of the match, allowing Brad Sewell to kick a beautiful goal on the run from outside the 50-metre arc.

The win allowed Hawthorn to take top spot, a position they had hitherto not occupied in 2012, despite being flag favourites for most of the season. Sydney were left to rue a second-successive home match in which they have given up a handy lead. The Swans will now need to defeat Geelong at Kardinia Park to ensure a home game in week one of the finals.

Lewis, Burgoyne and Sewell were magnificent for Hawthorn, while Josh Kennedy and O'Keefe were among Sydney's best. Despite the win, Hawthorn have not yet secured top spot, nor even a home final. The Hawks will need to defeat West Coast at the MCG on Friday night to do so.

COACHES' COMMENTS
John Longmire (Syd): We were disappointed we didn't get the win but we played against an extremely talented team tonight, and we had a real crack.

Alistair Clarkson (Haw): To come to Sydney and give the Swans a five or six goal head start... it was really pleasing to come back and win the game.

Umpires: Donlon, McBurney, Margetts
