Match Report

Brett Ratten's send-off game did not pan out the way he or Carlton fans would have hoped on Sunday. The Blues, who last week announced that the match would Ratten's last as Carlton coach, gave up a three-quarter time lead to go down by 15 points to St Kilda. The match was a surprisingly fiery encounter, given that neither of these sides had anything other than respect to gain from victory. The tone of the match was set even before the first bounce, when Saint forward Stephen Milne and Carlton's Andrew Walker tangled angrily, resulting in a new jumper being required for Walker.

When the footy got underway, it was St Kilda that settled first, kicking the first two goals of the match. But the Blues worked their way back into the match and led 4.5 to 4.1 at quarter time. The margin could have been more but for some poor disposal by foot from Carlton, both when shooting for goal and in general play. That theme was to continue for much of the match for Brett Ratten's men. Carlton's Brock McLean carried on his "resurrection season" form throughout the game, although he too was guilty of missing shots at goal. St Kilda youngster Terry Milera provided a cruel counterpoint, kicking three goals.

The margin was rarely more than two goals and Carlton went into the final quarter leading 10.15 to 10.9. An early Jack Steven goal was answered by one each to Jarrad Waite and McLean and half way through the last term, the Blues held a 15-point lead and it looked as though Ratten's last hurrah would be a happy one. But a long goal to David Armitage reignited the Saints and they kicked the last five majors of the game to ease to victory. While McLean was clearly Carlton's best, he was well supported by Jarrad Waite. Best for the Saints were Gram, Armitage and Steven.

Carlton will now embark on a search for a new coach, although many believe the job already belongs to Mick Malthouse. Scott Watters could be reasonably happy with a 12-10 return in his first season as an AFL coach but will also rue a number of close losses that led to the Saints falling two games short of a finals berth.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Scott Watters: I thought our guys, late in the game, probably learnt from some of our close losses. We were able to control our ball use a little bit better, which was really pleasing.
Brett Ratten: We had great opportunity to win the game, but missed opportunities cost is victory. The players' effort was unquestionable.

Umpires: Margetts, Jeffery, Bannister
