Match Report

In a match that underscored the divergent fortunes of these two clubs in the second half of 2012, Brisbane easily accounted for the Western Bulldogs in the final home and away game of the AFL season at the Gabba. Prior to these two sides meeting at Etihad Stadium in Round 13, the Bulldogs had won five of 11 games this season, and were only one game plus percentage out of the top eight. At the same stage, Brisbane had won just four matches. Brisbane went onto defeat the Bulldogs easily that day, sparking a very respectable second half of the season, in which the Lions won six of their remaining 11 games. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, have lost all 11 games in the same period.

Sunday's game began in a lacklustre fashion, and by quarter-time, Brisbane had scored just the one goal, while the Western Bulldogs could not even muster that many. The Lions then hit their straps in the second quarter, booting eight goals to two, and the game was as good as over at half-time. The Bulldogs showed some semblance of fight and creativity in the last quarter, kicking five goals for the term, as did the Lions. The final margin between the sides was 67 points, and most watching would agree that it was a fair representation of the gap between the two sides at the season's close.

For Brisbane, Daniel Rich was magnificent, and his 25-touch game was iced by four booming goals from outside the 50-metre arc. Jonathan Brown played close to his best game of the season, kicking five in a dominant display, while Simon Black looked as though he could play football at AFL level for some time yet. There was some silver-lining for the Dogs, with Cooney moving freely and gathering over 25 touches for the second week running. Footy fans in general, and Dogs' fans in particular, will be hoping to see Cooney successfully manage his degenerative knee injury and play many more such games in 2013.

Brisbane coach Michael Voss can look forward to next year with genuine confidence, while Brendan McCartney will surely be glad that his annus horribilis debut season as coach has come to an end.

COACHES COMMENTS
Michael Voss (Bris): [We can see] some real signs that there's genuine improvement in the group.
Brendan McCartney (WB): There was too much fluctuation with our intensity around the ball. We've got a big core of players who can't wait to start training again and get our club better.

Umpires: Stewart, Armstrong, Mitchell
