Match Report

The 197th and penultimate home-and-away game of 2012 saw the season's first draw, when Richmond and Port Adelaide played out an entertaining 106-106 tie at the MCG on Sunday. While neither side had a chance of competing in the finals, the match would have been seen as important for both clubs, with Richmond keen to show itself as a club ready to taken the next step in 2013, while the Power would have been hopeful of giving caretaker coach Garry Hocking his first win in the role.

There were stages at which both teams looked as though they would gain the ascendency but the margin was never more than 17-points in Richmond's favour, nor 14 points in Port Adelaide's. With 10 minutes remaining in the match, it Richmond appeared to have the match in its keeping, leading by 12 points. But late goals to David Rodan and Aaron Young brought the margin back to a point and a last gasp snap from Domenic Cassisi tied the scores with under a minute remaining. Neither side could break through the opposition defence in the remaining seconds and when the siren sounded, scores were level, and the 150th drawn match in VFL/AFL history had been registered. The result means that at least one drawn match has occurred in every season since 2004.

For the Tigers, Jack Riewoldt kicked six goals to take out his second Coleman Medal in three years. Riewoldt finished with 65 goals, three clear of Fremantle's Matthew Pavlich and Geelong's Tom Hawkins. Trent Cotchin played another fine game, and he is expected to figure prominently at this year's Brownlow Medal count. For Port Adelaide, Jay Schulz capped an injury-interrupted season with four goals, while Brad Ebert (22 disposals and three goals), finished off his first season with the Power in fine style.

Richmond, despite finishing 12th with 10 and a half wins, look to be on the verge of genuine improvement and a finals-berth will be seen by most as a minimum pass-mark for the Tigers in 2013. Port Adelaide finish the season with five and a half wins, an uncertainty as to who will be its coach in 2013, and what looks to be a long road ahead to becoming an AFL force again.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Damien Hardwick (Rich): [The game] sort of summed up our season: not quite good enough when we needed to be. I thought we looked flat.
Garry Hocking (Port): The draw's not great for us but there were some good things to come out of the game, with regard to our ability to fight back. I'm not sure [about applying for the permanent coaching role].

Umpires: Kamolins, Pannell, Jacob Mollison
