Match Report

North Melbourne condemned itself to a tough road trip in the first week of the finals by only defeating wooden-spooner GWS by 28 points on Saturday. A win by somewhere near the 100-point mark would have seen the Kangaroos leapfrog Fremantle on percentage, enabling them to stay in Melbourne and face Geelong next week. But the Roos were lacklustre for much of the match and, despite winning each of the last three quarters, rarely looked like a finals team.

Scott Thompson excelled for the Kangaroos, collecting 39 possessions, while Cunnington (33 touches), Campbell (3 goals) and Gibson (32 disposals, 1 goal) were also very good. For GWS, Toby Greene was again magnificent, as was Callan Ward. Israel Folau played one of his better games for the Giants.

North Melbourne finish in eighth place with 14 wins, its best return under coach Brad Scott. Its "reward" will be a trip to Perth to take on the Eagles in a sudden-death final.

GWS ends its season with just two wins, but despite that fact there is a general consensus in the footballing world that their year was as good as could be hoped for, and that they are well placed to become a consistently competitive AFL team sooner rather than later.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Kevin Sheedy (GWS): It was a final for us tonight, we played that way, it was an opportunity to play well against a team in the eight. I'm really pleased with tonight's performance. We've come a long way.

Brad Scott (NM): The way we finished off the game, with all due respect to the opposition, was clearly with next week in mind.
