Match Report

The last game for the weekend sends us down to the outer southern metro and into the Flinders University Stadium in Noarlunga for the SA Civil War between the Panthers and the Roosters... South vs North. This was another return bout for the year, earlier this season the Roosters won at Prospect by 11 points in Round 4. This was definitely a game of two halves in a low-scoring game, the Roosters ruled the first half by keeping the Panthers to five behinds and led by 35 points at half-time. The inaccuracy bug would then take up residence in both camps for the second half, the Panthers did mount a comeback as the Roosters struggled to string goals together but couldn't bridge the gap. South's sodden and dirty battle against the premiers at Woodville saw them go down by a point last week, while the Roosters beat out neighbours Norwood at home by 11 points. This game would somewhat mirror their earlier season clash, but instead of halves it would be a see-saw battle. The Panthers started off best, though their accuracy was a bit off as they kicked to a 21-point lead by quarter-time with the scores reading 4.4 to 1.1. The Roosters came crowing back in the second term though, chopping the Panthers lead in half by the long break. They outscored the Panthers 3.2 to 1.3, the home side's advantage down to 10 points at half-time. South would bag the first goal of the second half within two minutes of the restart, but their 16-point lead was being slowly but surely chipped away at by the Roosters. Both sides had several chances on goal but the bug was still well entrenched in their camps. North would take over the lead late in added time, altogether they scored 4.4 to South's 2.3 to be ahead by three points at three quarter-time. The final term was just an all-out arm-wrestle as neither side gave the other an inch. For more than 20 minutes, all either side could find was minor scores as the Roosters desperately clung to their narrow lead, scoring three points to two. But the Panthers got their breakthough and game-winning goal in time-on, nabbing a two-point victory to narrow the gap between themselves and fifth spot. Elliot Dunkin was the Panthers' best on ground, with 24 disposals, seven marks as well as six tackles and clearances. For the Roosters, it was Harrison Wigg with 34 disposals, 10 marks and five tackles.
