Match Report

Hawthorn justified its season-long status as premiership favourite with a convincing win over Collingwood in front of 85,625 fans at the MCG on Friday night.

The opening period of this match served as a fine example of the step up in intensity from home-and-away to finals football. Collingwood came out with a very strong and physical approach in a concerted effort to throw Hawthorn off their precision football game. But the Hawks demonstrated that they were more than capable of withstanding such pressure and applying plenty of their own towards the Magpies. Such was the ferocity of the close contests, neither side was able to score a goal until the 17-minute mark of the opening term.

The deadlock was finally broken by a goal to Hawk skipper Luke Hodge. As the game then began to open up, goals to Magpies Sharrod Wellingham and Ben Sinclair were answered by one each to Cyril Rioli and Luke Breust. After a further five-minute arm-wrestle, Shane Savage kicked his first just before the quarter-time siren, giving the Hawks a 15-point lead at the first change. As pleased as Hawthorn fans would have been with Savage's goal, he was in fact only on the field as a substitution for Brendan Whitecross, who had been forced to leave the field with a knee injury. The worst fears of Whitecross and Hawthorn were realised the following day when scans showed that he had snapped an ACL and would be facing up to 12 months on the sidelines.

The second quarter was again somewhat of an arm-wrestle with neither side able to gain the ascendancy. Andrew Krakouer's second goal at the 25-minute mark gave Collingwood a one point lead and it appeared as though this match would remain alive until well into the last quarter. But Hawthorn was able to gain a crucial break on the Magpies with goals to Isaac Smith, David Hale and Lance Franklin. This enable the Hawks to go into main break with an 18-point lead, and they were never headed from that point onwards.

And entertaining third term saw he two sides share eleven goals, six to Hawthorn and five to Collingwood but the Magpies were unable to make inroads on the Hawks' lead.

The Hawks took a 24-point lead into the last term and any thoughts of a Collingwood comeback were quickly extinguished in the first nine minutes in the last quarter, with goals to Xavier Ellis, Jarryd Roughead, Hodge and Franklin. The Magpies battled on manfully but when the final siren sounded the margin in favour of the Hawks was 38 points and many pundits believed that Alastair Clarkson's team already had one hand on the 2012 premiership cup.

Hawthorn's reward is a week off and a home final against the winner of next week's Adelaide-Fremantle semi-final. The Magpies will need to regroup before taking on a rampaging West Coast on Saturday night. An off-the-ball bump by Magpie captain Nick Maxwell that left Hawthorn's Paul Puopolo with blood streaming from his nose was expected to come under the notice of the Match Review Panel. Collingwood will be hoping that Maxwell escapes penalty.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Alastair Clarkson (Haw): It was a super contest. The first half of the first quarter, I haven't seen 36 guys having a crack at the footy like that for a long time. Our defenders were quite outstanding at spoiling that high ball. It's just as well they were - Cloke still kicked six! He played a tremendous game. Our focus now goes to looking after our bodies and getting ourselves right for the prelim. You move on pretty quickly.

Nathan Buckley (Coll): The scoring shots (35 to 22) and the inside 50s (64 to 46) highlights a fair difference in the sides, but I would have thought that for the majority of the match it was really tight. The first ten minutes of the last quarter was where they nutted us in close through the clearances. There talent in front of the ball got on top of us and that's where the margin is. The last thing I'm going to do is sit here and say we lost the game because of umpiring because that's not a fact. You need to be good enough, long enough, in enough areas to be able to buffer that.

UMPIRES: Nicholls, Meredith, McInerney
