Match Report

Fremantle drew the season's first blood in a typically fiery Western Derby, defeating a depleted West Coast by 28 points at Subiaco. The match followed a script very reminiscent of the previous night's Adelaide v Essendon match, with the Eagles jumping out of the blocks and leading by 21 points at the 15-minute mark of the opening term. Ashton Hams was running riot for the Eagles, with two goals to his name. A free kick to Nick Suban gave the Dockers their first goal and Ross Lyon's men were thereafter able to gradually work themselves back into the match. Another free kick allowed Chris Mayne to goal just before the quarter-time siren , allowing the Dockers to go to the first break only 11 points in arrears.

An even and aggressive second term saw the two sides trade goals, if not blows. Walters and Crowley kicked majors to give Fremantle the lead before answering goals to Mark LeCras, in his first game back from a knee reconstruction, and Josh Kennedy restored an 11-point lead to West Coast. Another to Kennedy at the 23-minute mark saw the Eagles skip out to a three-goal lead but a string of behinds and a late goal to ex-Port Adelaide player Danyle Pearce saw that margin cut back to nine points at the main break.

Fremantle broke the game open in the third quarter kicking six goals to one, with the two Michaels, Barlow and Walters having a real influence. LeCras scored the Eagles only goal for the term but he then suffered another unfortunate injury, breaking his arm in an accidental collision with Fremantle's Tendai Mzungu.

The Dockers went into last term with a 24-point buffer. Ex-Saint Jamie Cripps gave the Eagles hope with a goal at the two-minute mark but a quick reply from Chris Mayne less than two minutes later restored Fremantle's four-goal lead and they were never really challenged from that point, running out comfortable 28-point victors in the end.

Barlow and Mundy were excellent for the Dockers, as was Jonathan Griffen in the ruck. Griffen will be a vital cog in the first half of 2013, with news filtering through after the match that the Dockers' number one ruckman , Aaron Sandilands had had surgery on his hamstring and would be out for 8-12 weeks. Josh Kennedy and Adam Selwood were amongst West Coast's best.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Ross Lyon (Frem): We were really pleased to get the four points. Round 1 is really important. We all come off quick summers full of hope and expectation. We thought we were in really good shape and that was proven.

John Worsfold (WCo): The game was pretty even in the first half but we did have, I think, opportunities to have a better lead and we wasted those opportunities. We went in without Wellingham, Naitanui and Kerr and that's where I think they dominated.

INJURIES
Fremantle: Ballantyne (knee)
West Coast: LeCras (arm), Mackenzie (hamstring)

SUBSTITUTES
Fremantle: Cameron Sutcliffe replaced Hayden Ballantyne during the last quarter
West Coast: Andrew Embley replaced Mark Lecras at three-quarter time

UMPIRES: Margetts, Stevic, McInerney
