In a classic encounter of "master versus pupil", the pupil, Nathan Buckley, has emerged victor as Collingwood defeated Carlton at an enthralling encounter in front of more than 84,000 fans at the MCG. The master, Mick Malthouse, has now endured closes losses in his two opening matches at the helm of the Blues.
After a tight opening 10 minutes, the Blues got the early jump on Collingwood, with Andrew Walker kicking three goals in three minutes to give Carlton a 16-point lead. Jamie Elliott, in just his 17th match, then gave an indication of what was to come with the Magpies' first at the 16-minute mark. Scott Pendlebury then earned a free kick in front of goal and converted to give Collingwood their second before Jarryd Blair kicked another to reduce the difference to just three points at quarter-time.
As had been the case in the first term, no goals were scored in the opening 10 minutes of the second, during which time a short shower hit the MCG. Jeff Garlett broke the stalemate with a running goal from just inside 50 and the Blues led by five points. Seven minutes later, with the sun now shining, Ben Sinclair responded with a goal after a mark 40 metres out. Carlton then kicked three of the next four goals (two to Chris Yarran and one to Kade Simpson) to take a 10-point lead into the main break.
Jamie Elliott kicked his second to open third quarter proceedings before Tom Bell, playing his eighth game, burst through the pack to restore an 11-point buffer for Carlton. Yarran then scored his third and the Blues held sway by 17 points at the 10-minute mark. Collingwood then mounted a challenge, with goals to Marty Clarke and Heath Shaw, but Sam Rowe and Marc Murphy responded for the Blues to retore a 13-point margin. Elliott and Blue Jeff Garlett then traded goals before Tyson Goldsack scored Collingwood's 10th just before the three-quarter-time siren. The margin at the last change was 10 points.
It was Collingwood who made the running when the final term began, with Ben Sinclair, Blair and Elliott all goaling. Garlett giot one back for Carlton but Dane Swan responded three minutes later and Collngwood led by 11. Carlton attacked strongly for the next few minutes and a goal to Lachie Henderson at the 22-minute mark brought the margin back to just three points. Enter Jamie Elliott again - he marked and kicked his fifth and the Magpies led by 10.
But Carlton came again and Kane Lucas reduced the margin to less than a goal. The margin was still under a goal at the 28-minute mark but in the final two minutes, but Steele Sidebottom and Pendlebury sealed the deal for Collingwood with the final two goals for the match.
Elliott and Shaw were excellent for the Pies, while Murphy and Kreuzer were key players for the Blues. Carlton has now lost two consecutive games in which it has topped the 100-point mark, the first time in Mick Malthouse's 666-game career that has happened to a team he's coached. The Blues now face Geelong at Docklands in round three, while the Magpies take on last year's runners-up Hawthorn in what should be another classic match at the home of footy.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Nathan Buckley (Coll): [After the loss of Jolly to injury] Quinten Lynch was huge to be able to work through basically as the sole ruckman through the last three and a half quarters of the match. I thought the players on the whole in the last quarter when the game was on the line wanted to win the game, which was more than encouraging.
Mick Malthouse (Carl): What went wrong? We played probably one of the best sides in the competition and they were better when it counted most. They were smarter with the footy and they just worked a bit harder.
