Match Report

Hawthorn has scored an outstanding away win against West Coast in Perth. Coming off a heartbreaking loss to Geelong and a six-day break, the Hawks were expected to struggle with Perth's hot weather and the wide-open expanses of Subiaco oval. However, the Hawks jumped the Eagles early and withstood several challenges before they produce a withering last-quarter burst to ultimately run out winners by 50 points.

The Hawks kicked eight of the first nine goals of the match to jump out to a 39-point lead early in the second quarter and it was always going to be difficult to reel that margin in. There were times when it looked like the Eagles might manage it, amd they got to within 14 points five minutes before half-time, and within 17 points in time-on in the third quarter. Each time, however, Hawthorn was able to answer the challenge. The win put Hawthorn's season back on track but left the Eagles, who have a long injury list, with a 0-2 record and in a vulnerable position.

Lance Franklin with five goals and Cyril Rioli and Luke Breust (four goals each) were huge for Hawthorn, as were Sam Mitchell (31 disposals), Grant Birchall (31 touches and two goals) and Luke Hodge (12 kicks and 13 handpasses) in his return from injury. Josh Kenned (five goals), Chris Masten (33 touches) and Luke Shuey (26 disposals) were excellent for the Eagles.

West Coast now have what should be an easy game, as they travel to Melbourne to take on the lowly Demons, while Hawthorn have another huge match, this time against Collingwood at the MCG.

COACHES COMMENTS
John Worsfold (WC): Pretty tough game but we got through unscathed, which is one good start. Saw some good things happening, so that was good, but overall they were a bit better than us. Disappointed that they kicked so many goals in the last quarter.

Alastair Clarkson (Haw): This is an outstanding victory. We came off a six-day break after playing Easter Monday against the Cats, which was a pretty torrid affair as well. We it was going to be a tough game, particularly because of the conditions and the different size of oval and we're really pleased with the win.

INJURIES
West Coast: Nil
Hawthorn: Sewell (hamstring), Gunston (ill) replaced in selected side by Savage

SUBSTITUTES
West Coast: Bradd Dalziell replaced Ashton Hams during the third quarter
Hawthorn: Shane Savage replaced Brad Sewell during the third quarter

UMPIRES: Margetts, Dalgleish, Rosebury
