Match Report

Pressure is mounting on Brisbane coach Michael Voss after the Lions surrendered meekly to North Melbourne at Docklands stadium in Sunday's round 4 twilight match. The Kangaroos jumped the Lions in the first quarter and took a 32-point lead into the first break. That margin could have been much greater, as North squandered numerous opportunities in kicking an amazing 5.10 for the quarter, to Brisbane's 1.2.

The opening term was highlighted by good and bad from Kangaroo first-gamer Majak Daw (celebrated in the mainstream press as the first Sudanese-born AFKL player). Daw took a strong contested mark in the opening moments of the match and converted his kick for a goal to the delight of Kangaroo fans and commentators alike. But minutes later a head-clash with a teammate left Daw prostrate on the turf. He was carried off with suspected concussion and substituted out of the game.

Brisbane managed to at least be competitive in the second quarter, and with both sides kicking 3.3 for the term, a 32-point status quo was maintained at half time. But the Lions fell away badly again in the third quarter. North slammed on seven goals for the quarter (through two to Lindsay Thomas, and one each to Leigh Adams, Lachie Hansen, Sam Gibson, Drew Petrie and Jack Ziebell). Only Josh Green and Rohan Bewick fired shots in return for the Lions.

The Lions showed some spirit in the last quarter, reducing the 65-point last-change margin to 63 at game's end but the overall result would have been a bitter one for Brisbane fans, and in particular coach Voss, to swallow.

Scott Thompson and Ziebell were great four-quarter players for the Roos, while Tom Rockliff and co-captain at least flew the flag for Brisbane. North now take on Hawthorn, who smashed them by 115 points in the corresponding fixture last year, at the MCG, Brisbane will take on Melbourne at the 'Gabba, with the Demons now buoyed by a duck-breaking win over GWS.
