Match Report

Geelong has maintained its unbeaten run in 2013 with a relatively comfortable 21-point win over the Western Bulldogs at Docklands stadium. Both sides were undermanned due to injury, with the Dogs missing Griffen, Murphy, Higgins and Dickson among others, while Tom Hawkins and Paul Chapman were sidelined for the Cats.

The Bulldogs got away to an early lead with a goal to Liam Jones after a big mark followed by another via a clever kick off the ground from Luke Dahlhaus. But the Cats then got into their stride with goals to captain Joel Selwood, Steven Motlop and Harry Taylor who started the game up forward in the absence of Hawkins. From there, Geelong gradually took control to lead by 16 points at quarter time.

Geelong stamped its authority on the match in the first half of the second quarter, with Motlop and Taylor kicking their second goals and Stevie Johnson his first. Jake Stringer kicked his first AFL goal and Liam Jones followed up with his third to cut the margin back to 22 points at the 20-minute mark. But the Cats steadied again with goals to James Kelly and Selwood and they took a comfortable 30-point lead into the long break.

Though the Cats threatened to break the game apart at times in the third quarter, the Bulldogs managed to respond throughout the quarter, Geelong eventually winning the term 5.3 to 4.3. The Bulldogs dominated the first 15 minutes of the last quarter and when Adam Cooney, Jones and Jordan Roughead all goaled within a five-minute period, the Bulldogs had suddenly cut the margin to just 18 points and an unlikely victory seemed on the cards.

But the Geelong defence settled and the two sides traded only behinds for the remainder of the match, the Cats running out 21-point winners in the end.

Harry Taylor (5 goals), Steven Motlop (3 goals and 19 touches) and Steve Johnson (30 possessions) were amongst Geelong's best while Liam Jones (4 goals) was excellent for the Dogs.

The Bulldogs now travel to Perth to take on West Coast, which has an identical 1-4 record, while Geelong will take on the improved Richmond at the MCG next Saturday night.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Brendan McCartney (WB): We kept finding a bit of space in the second half and that happens when you're prepared to run and work. We're learning to do that better. I think we probably played the club tonight that do it better than anyone. We did it well [but] would probably have liked to do it better in the last eight or nine minutes.

Chris Scott (Geel): We played poorly in that last quarter. The Bulldogs were certainly good in and around the contest. That didn't take us by surprise, we knew that was going to happen. To hang on and win the game is a positive. We did what we needed to do.
