Match Report

North Melbourne remains in touch with the top eight after it recorded a 10-point win in a close tussle with the previously undefeated Port Adelaide at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Saturday. In very cold conditions (the maximum temperature in Hobart was just 11.8 degrees), the Kangaroos jumped away to an early lead with a huge first quarter, kicking 7.2 to the Power's 1.5. But North had been in this position several times earlier this season and lost. They had surrendered quarter time leads against Collingwood, Geelong and Sydney already in the first five rounds of the year.

Port Adelaide did hit back in the second term, kicking five goals to two to reduce the margin to 15 points at the main break. But they gained the ascendancy once again in the third, with goals to Leigh Adams, Daniel Wells and Drew Petrie matched by just one from the Power, through Jay Schulz. Trailing by 27 points at the last change Port Adelaide kept coming. After an early goal to Lindsay Thomas took the margin beyond five goals, Robbie Gray pulled one back for the Power. Matthew Lobbe followed with another to reduce the margin to 21 but Leigh Adams gave Nort breathing space with his secobd at the 16-minute mark. But Port came again. Ollie Wines kicked his first and Jay Schulz kicked another to reduce North's lead to 15 points. At the 26-minute mark Angus Monfries marked and goaled and the difference was just 10. But North, who had surrendered a five-goal last-quarter lead to lose to Port last season, held firm in the last few minutes to record an important win.

The Power's first loss came under the guidance of assistant coach Alan Richardson, who took the helm in place of a sick Ken Hinkley who had remained in Adelaide.

North captain Andrew Swallow and Ryan Bastinac were amongst the best for the Roos, while captain Travis Boak and Kane Cornes were excellent for the Power.

Hinkley will take back the reins at Football Park on Saturday as Port takes on Richmond, while North will be hoping to make it three wins for the season when they play the Western Bulldogs at Docklands on Saturday.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Brad Scott (NM): They missed some chances early, which gave us an opportunity to stay in the game in the first quarter and then we took our chances late in the first quarter. That gave us a bit of a buffer but we knew they'd come back. They've done that all year, so we know they can score quickly. We had to stay on for the whole game.

Alan Richardson (Port stand-in coach): We were pleased that we hung in there [but] we got beaten fairly badly across the day in the really critical markers. But it was pleasing, the boys have really got a never-say-die attitude. There spirit to want to compete and an run is impressive.
