Match Report

Fremantle has consolidated a place in the top eight with a solid win over Gold Coast at Carrara on Saturday night. The Dockers put the now traditional Ross Lyon "squeeze" on the Suns, preventing Gold Coast from a scoring a goal in the first quarter, and allowing only two through for the first half. Given that Matthew Pavlich, Aaron Sandilands and Nat Fyfe were all missing from the Dockers team, Fremantle's 45-point win on what is AFL footy's longest road trip, was a victory full of merit.

The Dockers' renowned defensive pressure was on display from the start, with the Suns only crossing their forward-50 arc twice in the first 14 minutes of the match. Fremantle goaled twice during this period, through Hayden Crozier and Clancee Pearce. Another major to Alex Silvagni saw the Dockers take a 19-point lead into the first change. Jack Hannath, playing his second match, kicked his first AFL goal to open Fremantle's account in the second quarter and give them a 25-point lead. Gold Coast finally registered their first goal of the match through Harley Bennell at the five-minute mark. They managed one more for the quarter through Gary Ablett but Michael Walters and Jonathon Griffin also scored goals for the Dockers in this period, and the margin at half time was 24 points.

Gold Coast managed to stay with Fremantle for much of the third quarter, with Karmichael Hunt, Jarrod Harbrow and young Jaeger O'Meara all kicking goals while the Dockers managed four through Walters (three for the quarter and Griffin. The margin at the last change was 28 points in favour of Fremantle and the Dockers put the foot to the pedal in the last quarter, outscoring the Suns five goals to two to win comfortably.

Walters, Griffin and Garrick Ibbotson were amongst the best for Fremantle, while Harbrow and O'Meara were excellent players for the Suns.

The Dockers will now return home to face Collingwood, who are equal with Fremantle on four wins, in what shapes as a crucial encounter in terms of both sides' top four chances. The Suns will travel to the MCG to take on Melbourne on Sunday.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Guy McKenna (GC): We spoke about pressure and poise before the game. If you do that well you might get some respect because you might be able to knock over a top-eight side. I thought the boys cracked in, the contested possession numbers were in our favour but our execution going forward was not good enough.

Ross Lyon (Frem): A really pleasing performance from start to finish. But the players really stood up [and there was] strong leadership from start to finish. We bank four points and we go back and gather ourselves.

INJURIES
Gold Coast: Dixon (ankle)
Fremantle: Nil

SUBSTITUTES
Gold Coast: Aaron Hall replaced Charlie Dixon (ankle) during the third quarter
Fremantle: Cameron Sutcliffe replaced Alex Silvagni during the fourth quarter
