Match Report

Carlton is gathering momentum and has moved into the top eight after recording its third win in a row, comfortably accounting for Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. In a solid four-quarter performance, the Blues jumped the Demons in the first term and led at every turn to run out winners by 61 points.

After starting the season with three losses, Mick Malthouse's team has now won three on the trot and is looking better with each outing. The Blues also welcomed back Jarrad Waite from injury for his first game of the year, although they will now lose him again for a week after he was suspended for head-butting Melbourne's Tom McDonald. Waite and the Blues will be disappointed with that outcome,

The Blues small brigade dominated with Jeff Garlett and Eddie Betts each kicking four goals, while captain Marc Murphy looks to be growing nicely into his leadership role after a slow start. He had 28 disposals and kicked three goals. Veteran Heath Scotland was also excellent, garnering 28 disposals of his own.

For Melbourne, despite being beaten, coach Mark Neeld felt that the team showed encouraging signs and that there was no lack of effort. The Jones boys, Matthew (27 touches) and Nathan (7 kicks, 12 handpasses), were very good and Lyndon Dunn also played well.

The Blues can make it four in a row with a win over St Kilda next Monday night, while Melbourne will be hopeful of a second win for the season when they take on Gold Coast at the MCG on Mother's Day.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Mick Malthouse (Carl): We set an agenda today. We had to do a few things we haven't done. We've been under real pressure for five weeks, and the sides we've played have all been very good football sides. Coming in against a side that has won one game (and that's not at all having a crack at Melbourne), we needed to do a few things slightly different today to see how things went and I thought by and large we did. If you said [a win by] 10 goals at the beginning of the game, I would take that every day of the week.

Mark Neeld (Melb): There's was almost 1200 games difference in experience between the two sides and that's what you see on the scoreboard. The effort of our boys, all 22, was really good and these are the one that are going to bring the club forward. To see the effort across four quarters against a side that clearly is on their way to finals footy, that's good. [But] we got beaten and we're going to have to deal with that.
