Match Report

Fremantle scored an impressive win over Collingwood at Subiaco on Saturday night to the remain with striking distance of the top four. The Dockers jumped away to a big lead with a huge first quarter, and then survived a spirited Magpie comeback to win drawing away by 27 points.

As they have done several times this season, Fremantle opened the game at a frenetic pace. Chris Mayne, David Mundy and Clancee Pearce all had goals by the eight-minute mark, and when Cameron Sutcliffe scored the Dockers' fourth, they had opened up a 27-point lead half way through the first quarter. (Interestingly, 27 points ended up being the final margin.) Another Fremantle goal from Matt de Boer took the lead beyond five goals before Steele Sidebottom finally kicked Collingwood's first at the 24-minute mark. Michael Walters rounded out a great first term for the Dockers with another goal and they led by 32 points at quarter time.

Things got worse before they got better for Collingwood when the second quarter began. Walters kicked another in the third minute and Tendai Mzungu followed up with another five minutes later to take the margin out to 44 points. Sam Dwyer finally kicked Collingwood's second at the 11-minute mark and the Pies then kicked three straight behinds before Andrew Krakouer slotted another goal to reduce Fremantle's lead to 29. But a free kick to Hayden Ballantyne saw him kick his first just before half time and the Dockers' lead was 36 points at the main break.

The script changed dramatically when the second half got underway. Krakouer kicked his second from 45 metres out on the boundary after a mark, and Dane Swan kicked a running goal soon after to reduce Collingwood's defecit to 25 points at the seven minute mark. Alex Silvagni goaled to give the Dockers some breathing space but goals to Swan, Jarryd Blair and Ben Kennedy had the Pies within two goals of Fremantle at the 25-minute mark. Sam Dwyer roved the back beautifully soon after and when the siren sounded for three quarter time, the Dockers lead was just five points.

When the final term began it look as though Collingwood would go on with the business. Jarryd Blair marked and missed a shot at goal and then first-gamer, Irishman Caolan Mooney kicked a major which gave the Pies a two-point lead. Then, just as quickly as the game had turned at the start of the third quarter, it did so again. Ballantyne and Silvagni scored behinds to level the match and then Jack Hannath marked and goaled to restore the lead for Fremantle. The Dockers would not give up that lead again. Mayne took a goal square mark and kicked truly and then Walters kicked his third and fourth of the match and the Dockers were suddenly back out to a 24-point lead. Hayden Crozier put the finishing touches on the win with a final goal at the 25-minute mark, the Dockers winning comfortably in the end.

Walters and McPharlin were magnificent for Fremantle, while the evergreen Swan and Sidebottom were among Collingwood's best.

The Dockers now have a 5-2 record and are out of the top four on percentage only. They face a tough away match against Sydney on Saturday night. Collingwood are looking vulnerable in eight position. The Magpies have a 4-3 record and have two very tough matches against Collingwood and Sydney to come.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Ross Lyon (Frem): Good start. Mediocre second and third quarters. That's it in a nutshell. Good character. Our effort and ball use, it was a really positive [first] quarter. Then we lost our way a bit.

Nathan Buckley (Coll): Fremantle worked harder than we did for longer. We played okay through the second and third quarters but you've got to play four quarters to win a game of footy. We only played a half.

INJURIES
Fremantle: Stephen Hill (quad) replaced in selected side by Cameron Sutcliffe, Griffin (knee)
Collingwood: Clarke (hamstring), Mooney (knee).

SUBSTITUTES
Fremantle: Hayden Crozier replaced Jonathon Griffin (knee) in the first quarter
Collingwood: Caolan Mooney replaced Marty Clarke (hamstring) in the second term

UMPIRES: Margetts, Mollison, McInerney
