Match Report

Adelaide is now only a game outside of the top eight after a workmanlike win over St Kilda at Football Park in front of 35,000 fans on Sunday evening. After an even first half the Crows broke away from the Saints with a big third quarter, in which they kicked five goals to two before adding another three goals to one in the final term to record a solid 40-point win.

The victory lifted Adelaide the ninth spot on the ladder. The Crows are only a game behind current top eight sides Port Adelaide, Richmond and Collingwood and have a superior percentage to each of them. All three have tough matches to come in round nine, so a victory over North Melbourne at Docklands next Sunday could see Adelaide jump to as high as fifth.

The match got away to an uninspiring start with neither team scoring a goal until the 17-minute mark. This was not due to a lack of opportunity as both sides squandered shots and half way through the first term the Saints led four behinds to three. David Mackay finally kicked a major three minutes before time-on to give the Crows a five-point lead and the goals then began to flow. Stephen Milne restore the lead for the Saints two minutes later before a mark and goal to Shaun McKernan put Adelaide back in front after 22 minutes. A mark just before the quarter-time siren to Ahmed Saad allowed him to kick his first and scores were level at the first break.

Further dour football followed in the second term , with just three goals scored for the term, to Josh Jenkins and Bernie Vince for the Crows, and Stephen Milne for St Kilda. Trailing by nine points at half time, the Saints opened third quarter proceedings with a snapped behind to Leigh Montagna and then a stoppage goal to David Armitage, which brought the margin back to two points. Adelaide then took control. Scott Thompson kicked the Crows first for the quarter at the eight-minute mark to open the margin back up to eight and Adelaide kicked four more for the quarter through Daniel Talia, Richard Douglas, ex-Saint Tom Lynch and Nathan van Berlo to lead by 29 points at three quarter time.

St Kilda needed to make a scoreboard impact early in the last quarter and had a chance to so when skipper Nick Riewoldt marked but he pushed his kick left. The Crows kicked the next two through Jason Porplyzia and Jenkins to effectively kill the match.

The loss leaves the Saints in 15th place on the ladder with a 2-5 record but they will have a chance to improve that when they take on the 16th-placed Western Bulldogs (1-7) at Docklands next Saturday.

Rory Sloane was excellent for the Crows and his teammate Richard Douglas has returned to something approaching career-best form. The Saints were not lacking for effort but their poise and finish was not to the standard of Adelaide's. Leigh Montagna, Jack Newnes and Dylan Roberton were among the Saints' best.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Brenton Sanderson (Adel): The form of the last three weeks (two wins and a loss), there were some signs in the Hawthorn game that we were starting to recapture some of that form that we were looking for earlier in the season and we've been a bit more consistent. That's three weeks in a row where I've been happy with our output and they way that we're setting up and the way we're playing the game out until the end.

Scott Watters (StK): Our efficiency, when we had opportunities earlier in the game, wasn't where it needed to be. Over the course of the game Adelaide was able to sustain their pressure. I thought their ability to sustain running pressure, to support their defence was very good over four quarters.

SUBSTITUTES
Adelaide: Jason Porplyzia replaced Matthew Wright in the third quarter
St Kilda: Arryn Siposs replaced Beau Maister in the third quarter

UMPIRES: Donlon, Fleer, Stewart
