Match Report

West Coast has kept its finals dream alive with a dramatic come-from-behind four-point win over a hapless St Kilda at Docklands stadium on Sunday. The Eagles trailed for the entire match up until half way through the last quarter before snatching the lead, giving it up and regaining it again for a final time with only a couple of minutes remaining. The win vaulted the Eagles back into the top eight, at the expense of Richmond, although the Tigers had a bye this week and have a game in hand.

St Kilda started the stronger of the two sides, with Stephen Milne giving the Saints an early 13-point lead with the opening two goals of the match, the first after a mark and 50-metre penalty, the second with a trademark snap. When Rhys Stanley gathered a loose ball and goaled at the eight-minute mark, the Saints had stolen an early break on their more fancied opponents. Beau Maister followed up with another three minutes later and the Saints were away to a 'flyer'. But for the remainder of the quarter the Eagles began to gain some composure and work their way into the match. Andrew Embley, Nic Naitanui and Scott Selwood combined to kick the last three goals of the first term, and the Saints led by just three points at quarter time.

The remainder of the match proved to be very much an arm-wrestle, with the Saints gaining ascendancy at various stages, only to be pulled back into line by the tenacious West Coast side. When it mattered most in the latter stages of the last quarter, the Eagles remained the slightly more composed of the two sides, taking chances to kick goals while the Saints squandered several chances to seal the match. The most glaring example of that was when Leigh Montagna ran into an open goal, ignored two free teammates waiting in the goal square. and missed from less than 20 metres out. The Eagles kicked a coast-to-coast goal soon after to snatch the lead and the match.

Matt Priddis, who kicked two vital goals in the tense last quarter, was magnificent for West Coast, as were Scott Selwood (33 possessions, one goal) and Jack Darling (three goals). For St Kilda, Stephen Milne was back to his cheeky best, kicking five goals, while Montagna and captain Nick Riewoldt were also excellent contributors.

The heartbroken Saints will have a bye in round 12 before taking on Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday week, while the Eagles too well have a week off before taking on the in-form Hawks, also at the MCG, on Friday week.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Scott Watters (StK): Every loss is a tough loss but obviously when you're in front for the amount of time that you were, it's hard to swallow. I loved that way we played for large portions of tonight. I'm disappointed for the players more so than anything but if you play that way and you continue to grow around that type of football, then you have something that you can be proud of. We're not perfect yet, we know that, but they [the players] gave a fantastic effort tonight.

John Worsfold (WCo): It's just four more points on the ladder. We're not happy with the way we played tonight, but we've got the four points and they're locked away. That's the key thing for us right at this moment. We'd like to be playing better footy and have more players out there but that's what we have to work towards.
