Match Report

Collingwood has grabbed a place in the top six - for the moment, at least - after it comfortably accounted for Melbourne in the traditional Queen's Birthday clash between the two sides on Monday. In a match that went according to a script that most would have written before the match, the Demons took the game right up to Collingwood in the first quarter, before the Magpies gradually got on top in the second term and careering away in the second half.

The final margin of 83 points probably flattered Melbourne slightly, as the Pies missed many easy shots at goal throughout the match. Demon coach Mark Neeld continued to put on a brave face, extolling the effort of the players throughout the match. It was not a lack of effort but the huge number of turnovers that led to Collingwood's big winning margin, he said. While the current media and public speculation about Neeld's future has subsided somewhat, it is generally accepted that his demise is a matter of formality and the only question remaining is "if" rather than "when".

Collingwood's win was piloted by the experienced trio of Dane Swan (39 disposals, one goal), Luke Ball (31 possessions) and Scott Pendlebury (34 touches, one goal), while for Melbourne, the Jones boys, Matt (24 touches) and Nathan (30 possessions) flew the flag. Colin Garland also played an excellent defensive game under enormous pressure.

The win leaves the Magpies with a 7-4 record, in sixth place on the ladder. They are a game clear of Carlton and West Coast, and also ninth-placed Richmond, although the Tigers had a bye in round 11 and have a game in hand and a better percentage than Collingwood.

A match against the 14th-placed Western Bulldogs will see the Magpies through to their bye, while Melbourne will have round 12 off before looking to find a second win for the season against St Kilda the following week.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Mark Neeld (Melb): I don't reckon the effort disappeared [after quarter time]. I reckon the frustration level exploded. I felt a lot of empathy for the players. As try as hard as they do I think the Pies had 24 shots at goal as a direct result of us turning the footy over. It's what we're going to get with a young side.

Nathan Buckley (Coll): It was a pretty ugly game of footy, wasn't it. We did what we needed to do. To keep the opposition to 5.9, 14 scoring shots and 35 inside 50s was a focus, and we got better as the game progressed in that regard. We didn't finish on the scoreboard the way we would have liked to.

INJURIES
Melbourne: Dawes (ankle); McKenzie (lacerated face)
Collingwood: Nil

SUBSTITUTES
Melbourne: Luke Tapscott replaced Chris Dawes at half-time
Collingwood: Adam Oxley replaced Nathan Brown in the third quarter
