Match Report

Richmond has consolidated its place in the top eight and, in the eyes of many pundits, taken another step towards "football maturity" with a convincing win over Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday. Coming into the match, only one win separated the two sides, and Adelaide's coach Brenton Sanderson had the flagged losing as not an option for the Crows. Coupled with a public perception that games such as this are ones that the Tigers usually drop, the pressure on Damien Hardwick's team was significant.

But Richmond responded to that pressure emphatically, firstly in the opening quarter of the match, when the Tigers outscored Adelaide five goals to two to take control of the match, and again in the last quarter, in response to the Crows kicking the first two goals to close the gap to 19 points at the three-minute mark. The Tigers kicked the next five goals from that point to put the result beyond doubt, only allowing the Crows a couple of consolation goals in the last five minutes of the match.

The Tigers were brilliantly led by Brett Deledio (28 disposals), whose midfield drive set up many Richmond scoring opportunities. He was given great support from Dustin Martin (four goals and 19 possessions), Brandon Ellis (23 touches and two goals) and Jack Riewoldt (three goals and 13 disposals). For Adelaide, Patrick Dangerfield (28 disposals, two goals) continued an outstanding season, while Scott Thompson (29 possessions and a goal) and Rory Sloane (23 touches) were also solid contributors.

Richmond are now a game clear inside the eight and, with winnable matches against the Bulldogs and St Kilda to come over the next two weeks, have a chance to virtually secure a place in the finals and perhaps even push for a top for position. On the other hand, the Crows' hopes of another finals campaign are hanging by a thread. They are a game outside of the eight and will realistically need to beat both Gold Coast and West Coast after this week's bye to remain in the hunt.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Damien Hardwick (Rich): We're certainly excited by the depth of talent that we've got here. The thing that's been noticeable from our point of view is our tackle pressure at the front end of the ground has certainly improved. We thought we were relatively poor in that area but we've certainly improved over the course of the last month, which is great.

Brenton Sanderson (Adel): It was disappointing. We came over with intentions to obviously win the game and match their intensity. In the second quarter we let ourselves down - we had only six tackles and they had seventeen inside 50s. Their spread and outside run, we just couldn't keep up with them.

INJURIES
Richmond: Batchelor (knee soreness) replaced in selected side by Astbury, Astbury (head)
Adelaide: Nil

SUBSTITUTES
Richmond: Matt White replaced David Astbury (head knock) in the third quarter
Adelaide: Ricky Henderson replaced Shaun McKernan in the third quarter

UMPIRES: Margetts, Stewart, Meredith
