Match Report

Essendon remains in the top four - albeit possibly temporarily - after it comfortably accounted for a tenacious Gold Coast Suns side at Docklands on Saturday night. The win take the Bombers to third position with nine wins, a game behind Hawthorn and Geelong and half a game ahead of Sydney and Fremantle. However, those other four sides have a game in hand, having already had the bye. A win to that quartet this weekend, while the Dons have a rest, would see Essendon slip back to fifth.

The Bombers took control of the match in the first quarter and led by 19 points at the first change. They continued to hold the Suns at bay in the second term, and just before the long break had a comfortable 28-point buffer. But Gold Coast kicked the last goal of the first half through a mark and goal from Campbell Brown, and then came out full of running after half time. Young ruckman Tom Nicholls marked a pass from David Swallow and converted at the four-minute mark of the third quarter, and when skipper Gary Ablett snapped another a minute later, the Suns were only 10 points behind.

An arm-wrestle ensued for the next 12 minutes, with neither side able to score a goal. Successive goals to Stewart Crameri and Michael Hurley at the 17- and 18-minute marks broke the deadlock, and from that point on, Essendon gradually asserted its authority, going on to win by 43 points.

Essendon's best was former Saint Brendon Goddard, who had 38 touches and kicked a goal. He received good support from captain Jobe Watson (31 disposals) and Michael Hibberd (25 touches and a goal). Gary Ablett was once again Gold Coast's outstanding player, with 36 possessions to with his goal, while first year player Jaeger O'Meara (30 disposals) and Rory Thompson (19 touches) were also very good.

While the Dons are looking to shore up a top four spot, the Suns will have a bye this week before continuing their push towards an unlikely place in the top eight when they take on Adelaide at home on Saturday week.

COACHES' COMMENTS
James Hird (Ess): There were periods in the game that we didn't like but considering their form against some really good opposition in Hawthorn, Geelong and North Melbourne over the last four weeks, we knew it was a tough game and we prepared accordingly. This was a game that we knew we'd be tested and that we'd have to play at our best. If we played at our best we'd be a good chance to win and that's how it shaped up.

Guy McKenna (GCo): We've certainly showed some improvement in the first half of the season, but that's the first half of the season. It probably wasn't our best game tonight but against North last week and against the number one and two sides [Hawthorn and Geelong] the boys have certainly grown up.

INJURIES
