Match Report

The sixth "Q Clash" has seen the Lions triumph over the Suns at the 'Gabba on Saturday night. In a match that saw both sides hampered by injuries, Brisbane held sway over the Suns in three of the four quarters and went onto win the match by 33 points.

Matthew Leuenberger (29 hit-outs and 20 disposals) and Pearce Hanley (25 possessions and a goal) were dominant forces for the Lions, and along with Sam Mayes (also 25 touches and a goal) and Jed Adcock (27 disposals) went a a long way to providing the Lions with victory.

The Suns missed skipper Gary Ablett, who was absent with injury, but welcomed back Harley Bennel, who kicked two goals and had 28 possessions in his return-game from injury. Trent McKenzie (19 possessions) and Matt Shaw (22 touches and a goal) were also very good for Gold Coast.

Brisbane's win was their fifth for the season and the general view of the public and media is that Lions' coach Michael Voss is now more likely than not to retain the head role into next season. Gold Coast has also won five matches in 2013 and the two sides are three games out of the top eight and all but out of contention for September action.

After losing the very first Q Clash to the Suns in 2011, the Brisbane Lions have won all five matches played between the two sides since.

Brisbane will host North Melbourne in round 16, while Gold Coast will play Richmond at Cazaly's Stadium next Saturday. The Suns will head into the match with some confidence, having beaten the Tigers on both previous encounters at that venue.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Michael Voss (Bris): It was good to be able to finish off the game strongly. We were down in numbers and it's important to be tough in those moments. We didn't have a lot of support [on the bench]. How we rotated, how we used our players, what sort of strategy we had to go with late - it was all factored into and the guys were able to that. We got the momentum towards the end.

Guy McKenna (GCo): We probably had to make more use of the footy in the first three quarters. You obviously don't plan for injuries and things like that but they eventually take their toll. Up until three-quarter time we fought the good fight. That's the group growing.

INJURIES
Brisbane: Moloney (calf)
Gold Coast: Day (groin)

SUBSTITUTES
Brisbane: Ryan Lester on for Brent Moloney (calf) during the third quarter
Gold Coast: Andrew Boston on for Sam Day during the third quarter

UMPIRES: Findlay, Foot, Jeffery
