Match Report

The rain and records tumbled on Saturday afternoon as Geelong defeated Melbourne by 68 points at a soggy Kardinia Park in front of just over 23,000 fans.

26 millimetres (just over an inch) of rain fell on the two sides as the Cats mastered the slippery conditions to restrict the Demons to just one goal in each quarter and record a comprehensive, if not unexpected, victory.

In losing, the Demons set an unenviable record, going inside their forward-50 zone just 19 times, the lowest number ever recorded since that statistic was first recorded in 1989. By contrast the Cats went inside their forward-50 zone 70 times and the differential of 51 was also a record.

On the positive side for Melbourne, the torrential rain probably prevented Geelong from kicking a much larger score. The Cats' accuracy was certainly affected, as evidenced by their final score of 13.20.

For the Cats Joel Selwood (29 possessions) and James Kelly (21 touches) were excellent but perhaps the best player on the ground was Steve Johnson who provided Cats' fans with both good and bad news. Returning from suspension, "Stevie J" had 38 possessions and kicked a goal in a consummate performance but he was also cited by the Match Review Panel for dropping his knees into Melbourne's Nathan Jones, and incurred another one-match suspension.

Melbourne were well served former Cat Shannon Byrnes, who kicked two goals and had 19 disposals, and the "Jones boys", Nathan (31 disposals) and Matt (24 possessions).

The Cats remain in equal-top place on the ladder with Hawthorn - both sides have registered 13 wins - and will travel to Adelaide to take on the Crows next Sunday. Melbourne, languishing in 17th place on the ladder, will take on Brisbane in Darwin next Saturday night.
