Match Report

The Gold Coast Suns have made history by recording their first-ever win over powerhouse club Collingwood in front just under 20,000 fans at Carrara in Saturday's twilight fixture. The Suns made the most of an inaccurate Magpie outfit to lead at every change and survive a late charge to defeat the Pies by seven points.

Gold Coast's victory was also its first against a top-eight incumbent, signalling genuine improvement in the team over the past 12 months. The Suns were without a win after 16 rounds of 2012, and questions were being asked about its ability to be competitive in the longer term. But they won three of their last six games to avoid collecting the wooden spoon and in 2013 have now won six of sixteen matches, making this easily their most successful season to date.

The Suns' win was set up by none other than skipper Gary Ablett, who was at his magnificent best, gathering an amazing 49 touches and kicking two goals. He received great support from Jaeger O'Meara (three goals and 23 touches) and Jarrod Harbrow (21 possessions and a goal).

For the losers, Dayne Beams (34 disposals and a goal) and Dane Swan (two goals and 32 touches) were prominent but couldn't carry the Magpies over the line.

In 14th place on the ladder with six wins under their belt, the Suns will try and add to that tally next Saturday afternoon, when they take on Carlton - whom they defeated in round 22 last year - at Carrara.

Collingwood, while still comfortably inside the top eight, now faces an uphill battle in the race to gain a top-four spot. The Magpies are two and a half games away from fourth-placed Sydney, although they should return to the winners' list at the MCH this Saturday when they take on the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
