Match Report

Carlton has exorcised the ghosts of 2012, overcoming some poor kicking for goal and a slightly disappointing Gold Coast to beat the Suns by 43 points at Carrara on Saturday afternoon. The Blues increased their lead each term but did not really put the game beyond doubt until time-on in the last quarter, when Dennis Armfield kicked truly to give Mick Malthouse's men an unassailable 29-point lead.

In their round 22 match at the same venue last season, the Blues had thrown away their finals chances with an unexpected 12-point loss to the Suns, who had won just two matches for the year. The loss led to the termination of Brett Ratten's tenure as coach and he was replaced by Malthouse over the 2012-13 summer period.

With the Suns having beaten Collingwood for the first time in their history at this ground a week earlier, there was an expectation that they would push Carlton very close in this match. There was also seen to have been a fair bit of pressure on Malthouse and the Blues, given last year's events and the fact that the Blues have shown no significant improvement under the replacement coach.

But Carlton, led by fine performances from Matthew Kruezer (42 hitouts and 12 disposals), Brock McLean (27 touches and two goals) and Lachie Henderson (4.3 and 16 disposals), always appeared to have the Suns measure. Gold Coast's best included Charlie Dixon (two goals, 17 possessions, 10 hit outs), Matthew Shaw (22 disposals, one goal) and the ever-reliable Gary Ablett (32 touches and a goal).

The win leaves Carlton in the touch with the top eight. The Blues are ninth with nine wins, one game behind eight-placed Port Adelaide. They face a tough encounter against Fremantle at Docklands next Saturday night. The Suns are in 14th place with six wins, and will make the AFL's longest road trip to Perth next Saturday afternoon to take on West Coast.
