Match Report

West Coast remains a mathematical chance of competing in this year's finals series after it saw off a highly competitive Gold Coast Suns at Subiaco on Saturday afternoon. In a high-scoring encounter, the Eagles narrowly outscored the Suns in each of the first three quarters and then saw off a final-term challenge from Guy McKenna's me to run out victors by 17 points.

The win was inspired by fine efforts from Scott Selwood (27 possessions), Josh Kennedy (five goals) and ruckman Dean Cox (44 hitouts, 19 disposals and a goal). Kennedy's five-goal haul takes him to outright leadership in the race for the Coleman Medal, five clear of Hawthorn's Jarryd Roughead and Giant Jeremy Cameron.

Gold Coast was not disgraced by any stretch and were well served by Dion Prestia (28 disposals), Harley Bennell (two goals and 27 possessions) and skipper Gary Ablett (also two goals and 27 touches).

The Eagles are three games out of the eight and would need a virtual miracle combination of results to get them into the top eight by the end of round 23, not least of which would be them winning all four of their matches. Those games will be against Essendon (Docklands), Geelong (Subiaco), Collingwood (MCG), Adelaide (Subiaco). If West Coast could win all four of thosr matches they would arguably deserve a place in the September action.

Gold Coast cannot make the eight but will be looking to finish off the season strongly. The Suns play Melbourne (Carrara), Port Adelaide (Football Park), St Kilda (Docklands) and GWS (Carrara) in their last month of home-and-away football.
