Match Report

Essendon's 2013 appear to be in freefall after the Bombers were thumped by West Coast to the tune of 53 points at Docklands stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Dons have now lost their last three matches by a combined total of 188 points and have slumped from second to seventh on the ladder in that period. It would appear that the constant pressure on coach James Hird and the playing group as a result of the ongoing investigations into the the club's use of allegedly unapproved drugs is finally taking its toll.

Saturday's match was even until half time but the Eagles broke away in the third quarter to lead by 21 points at the last change and then ran away with the game in the final term, kicking six goals to win against an increasingly listless looking Bomber outfit.

The Eagles were led by great performances by Matt Priddis (28 disposals and a goal), Brad Dalziell (two goals and 25 touches) and Mark LeCras (five goals and 13 disposals). For the Bombers, Michael Hibberd (30 touches), Brendon Goddard (three goals and 27 possessions) and Dyson Heppell (27 disposals) were all solid contributors in a losing side.

West Coast are two games behind eighth-placed Port Adelaide and still a chance of playing finals footy, if not at the expense of the Power, then in place of Essendon if the Bombers are stripped of premiership points. The Eagles face Geelong, Collingwood and Adelaide in their last three rounds. If they were to win all three, they would arguably have justified a place in the September action.

Essendon's final three matches sees them come up against North Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond. Losses to all three sides would see the Bombers finish possibly as low as eighth, but ladder position might count for little if they are stripped of their points.
