Match Report

A consummate performance from Geelong against West Coast at Subiaco on Saturday night has allowed the Cats to maintain its hold on a top-two place of the AFL ladder.

Chris Scott's team put on a virtual footy clinic in the first half against the Eagles, kicking 11 goals to two to lead by 56 points at half time. The Cats eased off in the second half kicking five goals to four, but still won in a canter by 66 points against a side that still had hopes of making the to eight prior to the match.

The win was set up by skipper Joel Selwood, who kicked four goals and had 29 touches, Steve Johnson (37 possessions) and Matthew Stokes (30 disposals and two goals). For West Coast, Sharrod Wellingham (29 touches and a goal), Scott Selwood (26 disposals and a goal) and Matthew Priddis (29 possessions) all fought hard to keep the Eagles in the match.

While Geelong maintains its top two spot, it will probably have to win its last two games if it is to continue to do so. The Cats will play their last two home-and-away matches in front of their adoring fans at Kardinia Park, against Sydney next Saturday and against Brisbane in round 23.

West Coast, while out of the running for a place in the top eight, could still technically take part in the finals if Essendon is stripped of its premiership points. The Eagles woulds have to win their last two matches though. Those games are against Collingwood at the MCG and Adelaide at home in round 23. Even if they were to win those games, the Eagles would need several other results to go their way.
