Match Report

Geelong retained second place on the ladder and gained a psychological advantage over Sydney with a comprehensive win over the Swans in Saturday's twilight match at Kardinia Park. The Cats won three of the game's four quarters and halved the other one to run out convincing 44-point victors.

Paul Chapman, playing his first game since round four after a long injury lay-off, played a wonderful cameo role as the substitute, gathering 14 touches and kicking a goal in a comeback that keeps alive his hopes of playing in a fourth Geelong premiership.

But the win was set up by fine performances by Mitch Duncan (30 disposals), James Kelly (28 possessions), Matthew Stokes (37 disposals) and Stevie Johnson, who kicked 4.3 and picked up 26 touches. On a disappointing evening, the Swans were well served by Jarrad McVeigh (31 possessions), Ted Richards (21 disposals) and Kieran Jack (28 touches).

The news got worse for Sydney after the match, when it was revealed that Rhys Shaw had ruptured an ACL in his knee.

With one game of the home and away season remaining, the Cats will sew up second place on the ladder and a Melbourne final if they can overcome Brisbane, who surprisingly beat them at the 'Gabba earlier this year, at Kardinia Park next Saturday. A loss would see the Cats slip to third if Fremantle defeats St Kilda as expected, and Geelong would then have to travel to Perth to face the Dockers in week one of the finals.

The Swans' loss means it can finish only third or fourth on the ladder and, depending on the combination of results in round 23, they will face either Hawthorn or Geelong in the first week of the finals. They will play Hawthorn at Stadium Australia next Friday night.
