Match Report

The 1st Semi-Final is yet another cut-throat elimination match, with the Eagles facing the Roosters. These two teams are no strangers to each other in this final, they last met in a 1st Semi back in 2005 where the Eagles outlasted the Roosters by less than a couple of goals. In fact since the post-AFL era, the Eagles have contested nine of these games with five wins. Their last appearance in such a game would see them on the way to the 2011 premiership, a 70-point win over South Adelaide getting them back on song. During the same period, the Roosters have played six matches with just one win in 2006, also at the expense of the Panthers. The Roosters were the first teams to win a flag from the first semi-final, back in the 1931 season, a feat only replicated seven other times by other sides including the previous incarnation of the Eagles in West Torrens back in 1945. After North blew the Bulldogs away in the first finals contest for the season last weekend, the Eagles found themselves on the wrong end of the Bloods and found themselves once again in this position for a third time in succession since 2010. Could they repeat the 2005 result and go three wins?

During this season, the Eagles took two of the three minor round victories. After dropping the Round 7 match at Prospect, the Eagles would then take the following two games at Woodville in Round 14, then the Round 20 match at Menzies Crescent. The first term would be played to a draw on the scoreboard by quarter-time, the two sides had a dog of a time in goals with both kicking 2.3. More goals were on offer from here, the Eagles would land home a more accurate 6.2 to North's 2.1 in the second term to take a lead of 25 points going into the half-time break. However, the grip on the game was definitely not solid for the Eagles, who when play resumed, started to show signs reminiscent of their capitulation to West last week after holding a handy lead. The inaccuracy bug found its way into the Eagles camp again during the third quarter, they scored 2.5 while the Roosters added 4.1 to their score to bring the gap back to 17 points going into the final stanza... which is where the Roosters just exploded. The Eagles faithful could only watch, as did their players, as North went bonkers for a second week running. The red & whites rammed in 7.5 to the Eagles' 2.1 to overturn the three quarter-time deficit in their favour. The Roosters won by 17 points, booking a Preliminary Final spot next weekend.

North would name Chad O'Sullivan as their best afield, while the Eagles named Chris Kane as their standout. This would also be the last game for SANFL journeyman Craig Parry, who has opted to hang up the boots. After spending time at Port Adelaide and South Adelaide, he wound up at Oval Avenue where he finally scored a premiership medallion in 2011.
