The season kicked off on Thursday night at Coopers Stadium, as the Redlegs faced their fierce rivals in the Magpies. The inclusion of Power forward Warren Tredrea is probably one of the things that brought in the 7000-plus crowd and he was a major cog in the Port attack.
At the end of the first quarter the 'Pies were only one goal up, but the floodgates opened for the visitors in the second term as they landed home seven goals in 15 minutes. At half time the margin blew out to 33 points. When play resumed, Port continued to outrun the Norwood defence and added a further 5.4 to 4.2 to be up by 41 points at three-quarter time. The Pies relaxed it a little in the final term, but the damage was done despite a last ditch effort by the home side. The Magpies were home by 29 points.
Tredrea collected seven goals in his return to the black and whites, including a 55-point belter in the first quarter and was named best for Port while Scott Borlace was a stand-out for the 'Legs.
