In the final game of Round 18, the two original rivals of South Australian football once again locked horns at the Alberton Oval in the match between Port Adelaide and Norwood in the match for the Williams-Gallagher Trophy. The Redlegs were coming off a loss to the Eagles, the Magpies were luckier last week against South.
In the last match back in Round 7 the Redlegs outlasted their bitter rivals at The Parade and despite an inaccurate first term, looked like they could do it again after kicking 5.7 to 1.1 to lead by 30 points at quarter-time. But the Redlegs went to sleep in the second term and the Magpies stormed back into the contest, even though they were just as inaccurate on goal. They bagged 6.5 to 2.2 to trail by just one point at the half-time break. The third quarter was very even, the difference coming down to behinds with Norwood up by five points at three quarter-time after kicking 3.5 to the Magpies' 3.1. But the Magpies weren't going to allow their chance at fifth spot slip. With 10 minutes left to play, the Magpies booted four of their overall 6.6 in the last quarter to Norwood's 2.1 to win by 24 points, taking the cup and fifth place on the league ladder.
Jeremy Clayton must be a shoe-in for Port's 2008 B&F after being named best afield, while Nick Duigan was named best on ground for the 'Legs.
