On Sunday at the Alberton Oval, the Battle of the Birds was in full swing as the Eagles played host to the Magpies. These two clubs have an even spread of wins over the last eight encounters, the last being a 23-point Eagles victory at Woodville.
The Magpies have been playing with a newfound confidence as of late, but the Eagles were the ones with a 22-point advantage at the first change after kicking an inaccurate 5.5 to the Magpies' 2.1. The second quarter was evenly fought on the scoreboard, a single behind among the Eagles' combined 4.2 to Port's 4.1 made a difference in the margin. At the half-time break, the Eagles held a 23-point lead. When play resumed, the third quarter saw the home side make a run at the Eagles, they bagged 5.2 to the visitors' 3.2 to bring the deficit back to just 11 points at three quarter-time. But as has been the case for most of this season, the ability of keeping up the intensity for a continued length of time has been in short supply and the Eagles kicked 3.1 to 2.4 in the final term to take a 14-point win.
Luke Powell was voted best on ground for the Eagles, while the Magpies named Jeremy Clayton as their standout.
