Match Report

The lowest-scoring match of the season’s opening round was played between two sides expected by most pundits to finish in the lower reaches of the ladder this season. In a game that never reached any great heights St Kilda overcame a Melbourne side that was tenacious but which struggled to have any scoreboard impact, largely due to a run of 10 consecutive behinds after the Demons had kicked the opening two goals of the match.

Those two goals were enough to give Melbourne a five-point lead at the first change, but the Saints clicked into gear to an extent in the second term, booting 3.2 to the Demons’ eight behinds to lead by 11 points at half time.

The third term saw St Kilda make the decisive break of the match. Led by evergreen skipper Nick Riewoldt, who was at his dominant best, the Saints, under the coaching tutelage of Alan Richardson for the first time, kicked 4.1 (two of those to Riewoldt). Melbourne, being coached for the first time by former Swans premiership coach Paul Roos, could manage only 2.1 for the quarter, and the margin at the last change of ends was 19 points in St Kilda’s favour.

A dour last quarter saw both teams kick a brace of goals each and the Saints ultimately triumphed by 17 points. Riewoldt was visibly animated after the sounding of the final siren, and said later it was won of the best wins with which he’d been involved. The Saints have been widely tipped to finish last or second-last on the ladder, and the skipper was pleased the club was able to take a small early step towards proving the “experts” wrong.

Somewhat anomalously in the eyes of many, St Kilda has now won three consecutive matches when the last two home-and-away rounds of 2013 are taken into account. The Saints could make that four in a row and two to start 2014 if it can overcome the Giants at Docklands next Saturday.

Despite its loss, Melbourne showed signs of being a more competitive unit this year. Just how competitive will be tested strongly next weekend when the Demons take on West Coast, who were extremely impressive in their demolition of the Bulldogs at Subiaco on Sunday.
