Match Report

Undefeated sides Geelong and West Coast met at Kardinia Park on Saturday night in a match that promised to be a thriller between two sides very much in form. And at quarter time, with the Cats just ahead, 4.3 to 4.1, it looked very much as though that promise would be fulfilled.

After quarter time, however, the Cats threw all expectations out the window, putting on a football clinic to dominate the last three terms and run out winners by 75 points to stamp themselves as one of the AFL's power teams for the eighth season running. Such was Geelong's dominance, the Eagles did not score a goal after the first break, the first time this has happened in an AFL match since Hawthorn defeated North Melbourne at York Park in 2006.

Geelong broke the game open early in the second term, with a goal to big Tom Hawkins in the first minute. Jimmy Bartel followed up five minutes later, and when he followed up with another at the 10-minute mark the margin was out to 20 points. An expected response from the Eagles did not materialise and further Geelong goals to captain Joel Selwood, Hamish McIntosh and Hawkins ahead saw the Cats in command by 39 points at half time.

It was more of the same in the second half, though not quite to the same degree as the Cats outscored West Coast three goals to none in each of the last to terms.

The Eagles had no answers for the Cats, with Stevie Johnson (37 touches and seven marks), captain Joel Selwood (27 disposals and nine marks) and Matthew Stokes (28 possessions, 10 marks) all dominant. Bet for the losing Eagles were Andrew Gaff (24 possessions, seven marks), Sharrod Wellingham (22 disposals and three tackles) and ruckman Dean Cox (16 hitouts and 16 disposals) playing his record-breaking 277th match, one more than ex-teammate Glen Jakovich. Post-game discussion of the Eagles centred on the out of form ruckman Nic Natanui. "Nic Nat" had only six disposals and six hit outs on Saturday night and has struggled in the early part of 2014. He was subbed out of the match in the third term with what was described as a sore foot.

Geelong's win leaves it and Hawthorn as the only two undefeated sides of the season, and the two will square off in what promises to be another blockbuster on Easter Monday. Recent history between the two teams would suggest that game is more likely to fulfil its promise than Saturday night's Kardinia Park match. The Eagles will look to return to the winners list at Subiaco next Saturday night when they take on Port Adelaide. Both sides have a 3-1 record.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Chris Scott (Geel): I thought we were actually on top in the first quarter. We butchered a few chances in front of goal and probably gave them a couple of easy ones that were uncharacteristic. At this time of year we just want to keep working on the way we play. We're just trying to get better at the things we've worked on through the week and the pre-season. It was a good performance but obviously the opposition were decimated in terms of personal.

Adam Simpson (WCo): I was a difficult game. We were happy with out first quarter [but] I think Geelong took it up another level in the second quarter, albeit we were well and truly "off". We couldn't win the hunt on the inside and they got us on the spread on the outside. The harder we tried to win the ball on the inside, the more they got outside balance on us. It was a difficult night but we learnt so much.

INJURIES
Geelong: Andrew Mackie (hamstring)
West Coast: Nic Naitanui (calf), Matt Rosa (illness) replaced in the selected side by Patrick McGinnity

SUBSTITUTES
